snow shrinks away from sun
as do I, frozen inside.
rigidly wary of thaw,
mind in charge of heart,
heart caged, deaf, and dumb,
protected and preserved
by routine and discipline
until mind, distracted
(warm with wishes and wine)
will loosen its grip
and let slip
heart's truth through eyes
